The Douglas County Lady Tigers held on to defeat the Grovetown Lady Warriors in last night’s Sweet 16 contest, 41-39. The Lady Tigers kept the game close, in the first half, while trying to figure out the Lady Warriors. An explosive 3rd quarter saw the Lady Tigers take the lead, with an aggressive, pressing defense that lead to numerous layups. The Lady Tigers led by 10 points with four minutes remaining in the game, when it was Grovetown’s turn to step up the intensity. The Lady Tigers turned the ball over several times, allowing the Lady Warriors to cut the lead to 1 with under 20 seconds to play.
Grovetown had the ball and a chance to take the lead, but a steal by Jada Richards thwarted that attempt. Richards was fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws to give the Lady Tigers a 2 point lead with five seconds remaining. The Lady Warriors advanced the ball, when Junior point guard, Alana Gibbs, forced a jump ball. The Lady Warriors retained possession, with 0.3 seconds on the clock. A deflection by the Lady Tigers, on the inbounds play, sealed the game and placed the Lady Tigers into the Elite 8 for the fourth time in five seasons.
The Lady Tigers will travel to Forest Park, Georgia to take on the Lady Panthers, from Forest Park High School on Tuesday, February, 25th at 6:00 PM.
